Reason Iraqi Parliament Boycotted Presidential Election

News stories around the globe are talking about how Iraq is going backwards due to parliament's inability to elect a president for the country

First of all, here's what happened:

On Monday, February 7, 2022, only 58 lawmakers of parliament showed up out of 329 to vote for Iraq’s new president. A two-thirds quorum of the legislature’s 329 members is required for an electoral session. It appears that lawmakers boycotted the election.

The boycott happened after Iraq’s Supreme Court temporarily suspended the nomination of one of the presidential front-runners. The high court cited pending corruption charges against the Kurdish politician and former foreign minister.

Without naming names or getting into Iraq’s political details, maybe, just maybe, this is a good thing. What parliament is saying is: Over 200 lawmakers are NOT interested in having corruption as a part of their government on any level, thus they boycotted the selectorial process

Two things you should know: One, no new date was set for the election and two, parliament cannot elect a Prime Minister until this issue is resolved
