Newly elected lawmakers from the Sadr political bloc prepare to attend the first parliament session

Iraq’s new parliament held a heated inaugural session on January 9th. This was the first session since the October election in 2021.

Three hundred twenty-nine members were sworn into the new parliament.

The meeting was so heated that the oldest member of Parliament, who was leading the session, had to be evacuated to the hospital apparently due to the stress.

Even with the meeting confusion, parliament was able to get some work done. Iraq’s new parliament re-elects al-Halbousi as Speaker-Xinhua. This is the same parliament that will elect or re-elect the Prime Minister.
