Slow travel is what I do these days. Here’s what U.S. and Canadian expats are doing in Acapulco, Mexico.

I am staying in a hotel/villa. My rent is $600 a Month — View from my room. Two other ladies staying in the villa from Canada.

The Western Hemisphere is where I have traveled in the last four years: North America, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean Islands.

I am now in Acapulco, visiting friends and my doctor after a category five hurricane ripped the city apart in October 2023.

On the outside, the locals appear to be calm and coping.

However, before the hurricane, when I was here in 2021, there was a 7.0 earthquake.

Before that, the city was recovering from becoming the most dangerous city in the world, with cartel murders happening on every other block all over the city.

Despite its challenges, Acapulco has transformed into a safe haven for expats and tourists alike. As long as one respects the local culture and keeps to themselves, it’s a peaceful place to call home.

A small group of Americans and an even larger group of Canadians live in the city year-round.

Every weekend, different groups of expats meet and greet, have dinner, or go shopping. They find excuses to have pool parties, dinners or to visit…
