I didn’t know about Operation Paperclip when I lived in Germany….

But here is what I did when I put two and two together.

I was in my early twenties when I lived in Germany for one year with my ex-husband, who was in the US Army.

He didn’t have enough rank to qualify for Army housing, so we lived on the economy or alongside the German people.

I did not, and do not speak German. However, the small-town people made every effort to speak English because of the large number of military families in the area.

I realized the German people might be hiding something when they refused to talk about World War II. Here I was, a young woman who found it exciting to be living in a place that I had learned so much about in high school. World War II was a big part of our history class; the tests and final exams revealed this fact.

I wanted to know more, one because of my history lessons in high school and two because my father was a World War II veteran.

But the Germans were not talking.

It was not until I left Germany and began my own research that the subject became even more important to me.
