It broke my heart to read the story about a woman and her husband in Florida whose rent increased by $400, and they became homeless.

It probably never occurred to her to pad her monthly retirement income by freelancing online or even with an offline gig of babysitting for parents on date nights.

We all think things will be okay until they’re not.

We do NOT want to go back to work.

Yet, most baby boomers do not pad themselves against the unexpected.

Having left the San Francisco Bay Area ten years ago, I thought I would write a thriller-suspense fiction book and become a best-seller while enjoying the good life in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. This did not happen, at least not yet.

I lived in a $400-a-month studio apartment overlooking the Bay of Banderas for five years when all hell broke loose. Rents began increasing in Puerto Vallarta to rates that my small monthly retirement was not comfortable with.

Luckily, I had a male friend who was born and raised in PV. He and I started a small company renting out the oceanfront condos of our neighbors on sites like Airbnb.
